Your Test Results

When you attend for a test of any kind you will be told how long you should expect to wait for the results. Please bear this in mind and call the Surgery, once sufficient time has elapsed. Results for patients over 16 years of age can only be given to the patient.

To obtain your test results please telephone 0345 013 0720 and select option 3. Our receptionist will give you any message from the doctor. This may include the need for a repeat test after a certain period of time, or the need for a consultation. Please ensure that you contact the surgery for the results of any tests that you have had.

Our Reception staff are not qualified to comment on results therefore it is your responsibility to check them and make any necessary follow-up appointment with the Doctor.

You will be asked for some personal details when calling, this is to confirm your identity. The receptionist has the right to refuse the release of medical information if he/she feels that it does not pertain to the person calling. We hope that our patients find our high standards of confidentiality satisfactory with regard to releasing this type of information.

Results can be given to someone other than the patient if previously arranged with Doctor.

General Information about Test Results

Should the Doctor need to see you the Receptionist will book an appointment in accordance with the Doctors instructions. Usually the first available routine appointment is offered but in cases of urgency a same day or next day appointment is arranged.

For a variety of reasons a test may need to be repeated or medication may be prescribed and often the Practice Nurse will speak to you about this.

The results of tests carried out during hospital visits are not normally sent to the practice.

Results of Smear Tests

Normal smears are recalled every 3 years or if you have abnormal smears it may be more frequently. Sometimes a smear is inadequate, you will be called by the surgery to have it repeated. If there are any problems with your smear that need referral to a Gynaecologist the surgery will contact you. Smear results can take a few weeks to come back from the Cytology Department, you should also receive a copy of the result in the post.

If the test was arranged by your hospital consultant

If your test has been carried out at a Clinic or Hospital please call the Clinic or Hospital for the result, as we cannot action tests which have been requested by other Clinicians outwith the practice. If the consultant’s secretary or colleague inform you they will send the results to your GP, explain that you want the results from the specialist who arranged them who is in by far the best place to give appropriate advice.

Please note that we do have a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection. In this respect we will only give out results to the person they relate to unless that person has given prior permission for their release or if they are not capable of understanding them. As per our practice policy to ensure patient confidentiality, the staff WILL NOT disclose any details of the test but will advise you of any action that needs to be taken.
